Apthous Ulcer Treatment

Apthous Ulcer Treatment

What is RAS?

Recurring Aphthous Stomatitis, or RAS, is a common condition also informally referred to as “canker sores,” although this term may also refer to any other kind of mouth ulcer. RAS is restricted to the mouth, typically occurring in childhood or adolescence. These small, round, or ovoid ulcers have circumscribed margins, erythematous haloes, and yellow or gray floors. Oftentimes, these ulcers occur in areas where a patient’s skin is not tightly bound to the underlying bone, such as the inside of the lips and cheeks or underneath the tongue.

This condition can be characterized by the repeated formation of benign and non-contagious mouth ulcers, or aphthae, in otherwise healthy patients. These mouth sores usually last for about 7-10 days, occurring 3 to 6 times a year on average. Symptoms of RAS range from a minor nuisance to interfering with eating, drinking and speaking. Roughly 20% of the general population suffer from RAS to some degree.

What causes RAS?

Although the cause of RAS is not completely understood, the origin involves a T cell-mediated immune response, triggered by a variety of different factors that depend on each individual patient. Triggers can include but are not limited to nutritional deficiencies, local trauma, stress, hormonal influences, allergies, tissue injury, and genetic predisposition. RAS may be associated with systemic conditions, such as Behçet syndrome, auto-inflammatory syndromes, gastrointestinal disease, or immune defects, such as HIV/AIDS.
